You’ve Heard of the Short Queen RV Mattress, But Have You Heard of the Long Queen Mattress?

Short and Long Queen Mattresses Explained

First, let’s clarify the short queen mattress, commonly used in RVs and small spaces. The short queen measures 60 inches wide by 75 inches long, five inches shorter than a standard queen. This reduction in length makes it a convenient choice for tight spaces while still offering enough width for two people. However, the shorter length can be limiting for taller individuals who may find their feet hanging over the edge. The long queen mattress provides a solution for those who want a little more length without expanding the bed’s width. Measuring 60 inches wide by 84 inches long, it is four inches longer than a standard queen. This additional length offers more room for taller sleepers, giving them the comfort of a queen-size bed with the extra legroom they need.

The long queen is a great alternative for anyone who doesn’t want to move up to a king-size bed, which requires more space and additional bedding. A king-size RV mattress gives you a wider sleeping surface, but if length is your main problem, the long queen is much more likely to be the solution since it’s even longer than a king bed.

The long queen might fit into some standard queen bed frames, so it’s an easy upgrade if you’re already using a queen frame but want a bit more length. To be safe, get the measuring tape out. Even if a long queen bed isn’t an exact fit, you can order a custom-sized RV mattress with the exact specifications you need.

Benefits of a Long Queen Mattress

Even though the long queen mattress might be a novel concept for you at this time, it offers several benefits that may be worth your while:

1. Extra Room for Taller Sleepers: For individuals who are six feet tall or more, a standard queen or even a short queen may not provide enough room. The long queen mattress’s additional nine inches in length makes a significant difference, offering taller sleepers a more comfortable and restful night’s sleep.
2. Ideal for Couples in Small Spaces: A long queen mattress offers the same width as a queen, so that couples can sleep side by side comfortably. If you’re in an RV, smaller bedroom, or guest room, the long queen can give you the extra length you need without taking up much more sideways space like a king-size mattress would.
3. Suits RVs and Compact Bedrooms: In some RV models, a long queen mattress may be an option if the layout allows for additional length but not width. This is ideal for travelers who want to enjoy their journeys without sacrificing sleep quality. It’s also a great choice for guest rooms, where you may want to offer comfortable sleeping arrangements for taller guests without having to fit a king bed into the space.
4. Cost-Effective Alternative to a King: King mattresses come with a higher price tag and require larger bed frames, sheets, and bedding. A long queen mattress is typically more affordable, allowing you to enjoy extra comfort without the added expense. If you’re looking to upgrade your sleeping arrangement on a budget, an extended queen could be a practical solution.

Practical Considerations for a Long Queen Mattress

While the long queen mattress has its benefits, there are some factors to keep in mind:

• Room Size: Before purchasing a long queen mattress, measure your bedroom or RV space carefully. Although the bed is not as wide as a king, it does add nine inches of length, which could impact how it fits into tighter areas.
• Bedding Availability: Bedding for a long queen mattress may not be as widely available as standard queen sizes. However, custom sheets and bedding to accommodate longer or specialized mattress sizes are available. Look for retailers specializing in custom or RV mattresses to find sheets that fit your bed perfectly.
• Frame Compatibility: While the long queen can fit most standard queen frames, it’s always a good idea to check the bed frame’s specifications. In some cases, the additional length may require a slightly adjusted setup to ensure stability and comfort.

Where to Find a Long Queen Mattress

Because longer queen mattresses aren’t as common as standard or short queen sizes, you may need to look for specialty mattress retailers. Furthermore, sizing can vary from group to group. You'll see some definitions as short as 78 inches for a long queen mattress or as high as 94 inches. Many online mattress companies offer custom sizes and can create a long queen mattress upon request. Brands specializing in RV or truck mattresses also often carry long queen options, as these sizes are sometimes used in RV setups and extended sleeping arrangements.

A Long Queen Mattress Might Be Right for You

If you’re looking for a mattress that provides extra length without the width of a king, the long queen could be the answer. This mattress offers more legroom than a standard queen or short queen, making it ideal for taller individuals, RV owners, or anyone wanting extra comfort in a small space. Although it may not be as widely known as the short queen, the long queen is a versatile and practical option that combines comfort with space-saving benefits.

Whether you’re outfitting an RV, upgrading a guest room, or simply looking for a bit more room at the foot of your bed, a long queen mattress offers the best of both worlds— a spacious sleeping surface that doesn’t require extra width. The next time you  consider your mattress options, remember that the longer queen may be just the right solution for a comfortable and restful night’s sleep. If you're interested in ordering a custom long queen mattress, you can do so from our online showroom today.
